According to Fabiana Prado, manager of LIRA/IPÊ – Legado Integrado da Região Amazônica (Integrated Legacy of the Amazon Region) at IPÊ – Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (Institute for Ecological Research) – through its ability to absorb carbon dioxide, the Amazon helps to moderate global temperatures and stabilize the hydrological cycle, which, when altered, can result in extreme events such as droughts and floods.
