This Thursday’s Tarde Nacional – Amazônia (18th) talked about Ateliê da Floresta, a sustainable project that transforms forest waste into furniture and handicrafts in the Amazon. The interviewee was the executive coordinator of LIRA/IPÊ – Legado Integrado da Região Amazônica, Neluce Soares.
She explained that the project was dreamed up by Raimundo Mendes, or Raimundão, an important leader in the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve in Xapuri, Acre, 14 years ago. Today, it trains the community, mostly women and young people, to turn pieces of wood into opportunities. According to Neluce, the sustainable initiative is a way of valuing the standing forest and its native peoples.
